Switching desktops or recovering when your desktop does not display

My Linux Mint desktop sometimes fails to startup and I get dumped into the console. It is usually after a hard reset. My laptop does not have much memory and I push it very hard so I understand when it has a wobbly every now and again.

To list your installed desktops:

ls /usr/share/xsessions

awesome.desktop,enlightenment.desktop, gnome-fallback.desktop, cinnamon2d.desktop, gnome.desktop, ubuntu.desktop, cinnamon.desktop, gnome-fallback-compiz.desktop

To set your desktop manually edit the .dmrc file

nano ~/.dmrc &

[Desktop]
Session=cinnamon

The GUI method in Linux Mint

gksu /usr/sbin/mdmsetup
